A Multiple-access Scheme for Multimedia Cellular Sys- Tems

Today, cellular services include voice, short message service, and fax transmission. In the future, cellular will be moving towards multimedia applications, incorporating high speed data and video transmission. These services impose di erent demands in terms of quality and data rate on the system. In addition frequency planning becomes more and more complex as cell size decreases. CDMA seems to overcome the need for frequency planning, traditional CDMA techniques like direct-sequence CDMA and frequency hopping, however, do not allow for orders of magnitude di erences in quality and data rates among di erent users. In our paper, we propose a new code-division multiple access system design based on a multi-carrier modulation scheme which especially suits the needs for wireless multimedia applications. Due to signaling on the symbol-level, unlike other spread-spectrum techniques, receivers can still work on the symbol-level.
